Spring Clean Up—Cleaning Supplies

Pretty sure that if my cleaning products looked like these, I would be cleaning a lot more often. Pretty sure that I would do my cleaning in a bright skirt, heels, and pearls. Kind of like this…

…and it would be so much dang fun! (I might need to buy this necklace to wear when I clean to remind me of how much fun I am having.)

Anyway…today’s words on spring cleaning are all about cleaning products. Do you have cleaning items that you just can’t live without? Any brands you are loyal to? Products that really work?

As I was browsing through the cleaning section at Home Depot today, I thought about these pressing questions (not really, but I’m thinking about them now). I do have a hardwood floor cleaner that I love and I was hesitant to try something new, so maybe I am loyal to Orange Glo. I also prefer Simple Green as an all-purpose cleaner because it is non-toxic and biodegradable. It is also very versatile…I’m discovering that I could be using it to clean many more things than I do now. Other than those two things, I just use whatever is on sale.

Sometimes I go through a “natural” cleaning products phase using things like vinegar and baking soda. Today I needed some new cleaning products, but decided after browsing the cleaning aisles at a few different stores that I was going to come home and see what Martha Stewart says about cleaning products. Here’s what I found…

There is a great section on Martha’s website called Cleaning Products 101, where she uses lots of Martha-like phrases such as "mild is best" and "the power of baking soda." She also recommends other natural cleaners like vinegar and lemon juice. There are lovely photos, too, that I would love to have in frames. This is Martha’s suggestions for a basic cleaning kit…

Cleaning Products 101

A Kit to Keep on Hand

Your universal cleaning kit should include:

  • An all-purpose cleaner, or a solution of 2 tablespoons mild dishwashing liquid, such as Ivory, and 2 cups water in a spray bottle
  • A mildly abrasive cleanser, such as Bon Ami
  • A glass cleaner, or a solution of 1 part white vinegar and 1 part water in a spray bottle
  • Rubber gloves; lint-free white cloths; medium-bristled scrub brush

I like the idea of “less is more” with cleaning products. I also like the idea of using mild products, but I have to admit, I wonder sometimes if they are really killing germs. However, I’m sure that Martha and her minions have done lots of research and tests, and if she says it is okay than I believe her. Really!

So, I’m going to try some more natural cleaning products over the next little while, and see if I like the results. I will keep you posted.

I might try some of Martha’s products, too. They are available at Home Depot and on-line at Amazon.

Martha is also working with Method on a campaign called "People Against Dirty" to promote more natural cleaning products this spring. Go here for a chance to win great products, and then to Oh Happy Day to read Jordan’s posts about this campaign.

And just in case you need to know, here is a post from Canadian Living called “44 Things to Do with Vinegar.”

Happy Homekeeping!
